Book Review | The Heir by Kiera Cass

piders

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon—and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she’d put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess’s life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can’t escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn’t expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn’s heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she’s always thought.

Question: Does this count as a review even if you didn’t finish the book?

I wanted to buy the physical book in hardbound but since I was in a book buying ban, I decided not to cross my policy and downloaded the epub version. But looking on my screen I was happy that I talked myself out of it.

I don’t feel any connection with the characters and to note that I was 10 chapters in. The POV of Eadlyn was really shallow and annoying (atleast America’s tolerable), I really see her as a bitch and not princess material (she’s not even funny like Mia in the Princess Diaries).

I can’t. I just can’t. I can’t even rate it.

Book Review | The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Though the Greek and Roman crew members of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

thoughts

First of all, I would like to thank the author for making me fangirl over the book. Second, thank him for the awesome Hunger Games reference he did! That reference got me laughing non-stop for 3 minutes.

(If you haven’t notice it it’s in Page 112 Leo’s POV)

I got this book, as a birthday gift from my grandma last November, and I put it on hold since I have been bombardized with all the good stuff via the spoilings of my fellow demigod at twitter, tumblr and real life. It hurt when they told me that there was no Percy POV in the book.

(What are you smiling about Rick?)

It was as usual funny, sarcastic and epic. It was no problem there. But I wouldn’t say that this is a great book to end an amazing series.

  • The Characters

The characters are the selling point of this series and even the Percy Jackson books. We grew up loving Percy, we have found something with Leo, we evolve to loving Nico accepting who he is, we want to be the big trio of Reyna, Annabeth & Piper. (Note: I was not charmspeaked to say this words)

Probably my fave character in the book was Nico, he was a naive young boy back in the Titan’s curse. He had changed so much in a series, he had accepted who he was, find a home finally at Camp Half-Blood. (How long was I wishing that this would happen?) and he got Will.

Let’s not forgot on the funny scenes:

  1. Butter Popcorn War Sponsored by Nike
  2. Kym Who? (Not the Kardashian)
  3. Zeus: I am gonna Slap you
  4. The Doctor is In

meeeh

This is the basic request, “It needs a dash of Percy”. Don’t we all want that?

Another thing, was how it was wrap up. It was not messy thought, but it happened to fast.

But for me, it was just another window for a new spin-off staring Leo and maybe the  some of the old gang since Percy was intending to go to college with Annabeth at New Rome.

Book Review | My heart and other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.

There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution: a teen boy with the username FrozenRobot (aka Roman) who’s haunted by a family tragedy is looking for a partner.

Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together. Except that Roman may not be so easy to convince.

thoughts

I was suppose to study for my exams, but I have mentally challenge myself that a suicide novel is way better since my grades are on the brink of committing suicide altogether. It was an emotional overnight read. I did cry, hey we all do, and I started my class with a quiet a swollen eye. (My friends thought someone died)

“I wonder if that’s how darkness wins, by convincing us to trap it inside ourselves, instead of emptying it out.”

Ladies and gentlemen, THE FEELS!

The book start-off with the main character, Aysel seemingly bored in her job and was at a website about suicide, then there was a forum for Suicide Partners, now this feel likes Africa’s assisted suicide, but no you both schedule your deaths in a certain agreed date, agree on how would you two kill each yourself and die together, so this is not like Africa’s.

The story build was strong, and it holds it’s own even on how many suicide-related books I have read so far these year. The only problem was how abruptly the book wrap-up.  I kind of wished we got to see Aysel’s father towards the end. All we have from him was flashbacks on Aysel’s childhood and how he killed the almost-Olympic Athlete kid.

It will make you think about what matters the most to you and why it’s so important to keep those things surrounding you all the time.

BOOK NERD | ON TBR PILE: How would those unread books would feel

Hey you! Hey, answer me! Why don’t you think that I know you?

Don’t pretend that you don’t know me. You were the one who pick-me up and drove me straight to home like some bimbo someone can pick out from the bar.

Don’t pretend you have forgot me. I know you had a lot in your pile, but to think that you venture in this without thinking for spending time with me. What are you then? A new breed of cassanova?

You remember me now don’t you? Why? Didn’t the others did their jobs? Why are picking through the other pile! I am not done talking to you yet, mister!

Now you question my existence? Huh! Now you have the guts to blame on how pretty I look? Let me remind you that you made the first move! You initiated the whole thing.

I have a lot of questions for you too. Why me? You can’t answer that? It’s easy. One simple question and you can’t. Don’t touch me, don’t feel sorry for me. But before you let me go, answer me this. Won’t you give me a try?
